Sampler update

I found a conservation framer! Spoke with a local framer yesterday and will be going to his shop today.
Thank you to all who shared their thoughts with me yesterday...I so appreciate your input. I think I scared some of you when I mentioned Michaels. I never would have taken this precious piece there...I don't even take my own work to them!

I keep discovering little treasures on this old piece and have taken many pics to try and capture them all before it is behind glass.

This sampler was completed by Elizabeth White in 1810...she was eleven years old. She lived in Bilsdon Cross, England. The small buildings are dovecotes, and I assume the house is her home. The birds...my favorite thing and the reason I bought this particular sampler...are wonderful. I count a total of twenty one, some in pairs, but many different individual birds as well.

I look at this sampler and am totally amazed that an eleven years old created this treasure...thank you, Elizabeth White.

Thank you again for your help!

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  4. Robyn,
Thank-you for sharing all the close-up pics of your sampler. It is such a beauty and to preserve it as you are doing is indeed a gift to future generations. Glad you found a conservation framer to entrust the work. I can't get over all the species of birds in the sampler..... truly amazing for such a young stitcher!

What a great gift you will be receiving :) I'll be curious as to what the framer does about it being mounted on a sticky board. So glad you found someone who can do the job and do it right!
    Hugs :)

  8. Robyn, I am always in the hunt for old samplers, and amazed at the work of the young girls. I must share this, when women venture into my studio that is filled with punchneedle trappings, they often relate how they used to do cross stitch... Thats' my que, I tell them punchneedle is for the more mature woman who can't see well enough to make those tiny x's. After all have you every seen an sample that said age 45 or 50! I rest my point.

  9. Robyn, what a lovely sampler. I think of the young girls from long ago, sewing by candlelight, crafting such tiny stitches, creating works of art at such a young age...Someday I hope you show us where this wonderful gift will be placed in your beautiful home. Hugs from Maine, Julie.

  10. Wow, what fine work this piece is, the stitches are so tiny. What a treasure you have. I know nothing about the best way to preserve this fine antique needlework and I hope that you will find someone knowledgeable to frame it. Good luck with this.

    Hugs, JB
