...confusion

Bulah Higgs by Tammy Speicher/By Thy Hands Tinkering

Bulah Higgs is confused. She's been holding tight to her pumpkin in anticipation of the coming  autumnal holidays like All Hallows Eve and Thanksgiving...but...

...bits of Christmas

are popping up here and there...

and they had her wondering, "What day is it?", "Did I miss the turkey and dressing?".

Just as quickly as they appeared, they were gone. Gone to Dade City for the Christmas Open House at Antiques on Main Street on November 2nd.

Leaving Bulah content in her chair in the kitchen...anticipating the wonderful smell of roasting turkey, on what is her very favorite day...Thanksgiving. She is much relieved.

A question for the many talented needlewomen out there.

This sampler made the trip across the pond to our house recently and she arrived folded...complete with crease down the middle.

She is dated 1849 so she is delicate...but not as fragile as some samplers this age. My question...how do I get the fold line out without damaging the linen? Warm iron with a cloth over the sampler? I'd appreciate any ideas or personal experience suggestions. Thanks.

Margaret's sampler is a beauty. The colors are my favorite...khaki, black, red and brown. My favorite motif...two red lions.

Hope you all are having a wonderful week. How fast this time of year flies!!!

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  3. Pamela of My Pioneer Homestead had a tutorial for getting creases out of linen but that was before it was stitched. She dampened the piece, rolled it around a wax paper covered paper towel roll the put it in her freezer. When frozen stiff she unrolled it and pressed it with her steam iron.
I would press it on the backside with something padded under the face of the piece. Good luck!

  5. Oh I LOVE Bulah Higgs! And your new/old sampler is fabulous. I wish I could help you but I don't know anything except what you suggested sounds right to me. As long as you have a cotton cloth over it I would think it would be safe. Your Christmas stocking offerings are wonderful too. Hugs, Lori

    Your Christmas stocking are wonderful!
I would think gently steaming your sampler between cotton fabric would be okay.
    The colors really are beautiful!

  10. A great post with wonderful pictures. ;)
    Your sampler is a treasure.
I would lay the sampler face down on a thick towel... cover with a thin cloth that has been dampened and press with a hot iron.
Please let us know if you are able to get the crease removed.

  11. Bulah and I are on the same page, their are Reindeer next to Pumpkins, and Witches cozy with Santas... As for the crease, I would put it face down and cloth on back, be careful with damp or steam because the threads may not be color fast. Could a good dry cleaner help you??? Not to do the work, just to give you advise.

  14. Poor Bulah! Your stockings are so fabulous. The sampler is so sweet. You might want it conservation mounted. I am sure that they could remove the wrinkles.

  17. I really really really liked your post and the story of the confused rag doll. Oh, please don't tell Bulah I called her a rag doll as it may upset her equilibrium again. It is good she is sitting down. Your home is so beautiful! I love the colors of mustard in your front door and the throw on the black chair. Did you make the wreath? So beautiful! I hope you will reproduce the sampler as it is so pretty. The Scarlet Letter or Brenda Gervais from With Thy Needle and Thread may be able to help with your question about the beautiful sampler. I know it is a precious piece of history and beauty!

  18. Hi Robyn,
I just adore Bula! She looks so sweet in her chair too, even if she is a bit befuddled!! Your stockings also darling and I'm sure they have found homes by now!!
I wish I could help in regard to the sampler but do suggest that doing a search about antique samplers and their care may yield some good results! Perhaps you have already done that!! I hope you can find the help you need and perhaps share it at a later time! It certainly is a beauty!!! LOVE the RED!!! No surprises there!!
Have a wonderful week my friend!
    Warm Hugs~~
