S.O.S....I'm stuck

I started this wonderful little sampler recently and am now stuck. I am your average stitcher, and can read a pattern, but Polly has me perplexed. I am appealing to all you wonderful needlewomen in the hopes that your vast experience will get me stitching again.

I avoid 40ct....it's useless...I can't see the holes! I think this linen is 35ct....

My dilemma is this...the instructions say stitch second alphabet using one thread over one thread...I get that....this is what I don't get....

See the lower case abc..

...this is what I came up with...yuck...I am now totally convinced I can't stitch one over one...it's too small for me. How can I keep the alphabet small...but not stitch over one? I use a magnifier, but in this case it's not helping much.

I'd appreciate any advice or ideas...thanks so much.

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  1. Morning...I don't think you have a choice and still keep it all to fit. I don't use 40 much anymore either. I did buy cheap 'cheaters' reading glasses from Walmart. They come in different strengths and slide over my normal glasses. They do the trick for me. Good luck! MJ Quincy IL

  2. oh my... good luck getting through that... over one on any count is so time consuming. I'm not one to mess with patterns, so I can't help with an alternative...

  3. I like it so far Mizz Muggy ~ but I hear ya about the 40ct...turns me into a cross EYED stitcher for sure! perhaps since you're using a larger count linen, you could just go ahead and stitch the lower case alphy under the top alphy to fit? anyway you decide, I'm sure will be perfect ~ please do share what you come up with!

  4. lol! I'm about to tackle a whooooole lot of over one words on 40ct. It's not fun, but once you get into the rhythm, it's not bad. Make sure to have bright light and perhaps use magnifying or reading glasses? Good luck. You can do it!!

  5. I dislike over one also, but it is a necessary evil. Try doing a tent stitch instead of a complete over one. I think it's easier.

  6. Good luck....over one is extremely hard on 40ct....and 35ct won't be any easier. How about continuing on over two so the alphabet fits...but the numbers may not. Or you could stitch part of the alphabet and finish up with the numbers? Just some thoughts. I stitched Polly and had to make some adjustments too.

  7. Looks great so far but I think you'll need to either commit to the one over one or
go back to over 2 and see how it lands. Could look a bit wonky, but it's a young girl's piece anyway and I'm sure it will be a treasure when finished. ~Nan

  8. I have Polly Mumford in my stash to stitch. I'm interested to see how you tackle this! I agree with Jeanne, maybe stich your mini alpha over 2 until you reach the end and if you have room add some numbers. Or maybe your initials. How ever you do it I'm sure it will be sweet!

  9. I'm sorry I can't help. I've never used 40 and have problems with over one on 30! The thread keeps slipping under the linen and I had a great tutorial on how to do it correctly, but I lost it with the crash. Could you just follow the over one design with backstitching?

  11. I love this, but not so sure how to help. I have never stitched on 40ct before. Love this pattern and wish I could suggest something. Janice

  12. I'm no help, either. I won't even try 35 count over two.
    Good luck.

  13. I'm no help either on this one.
I've only done three cross stitch pieces in my life and needed a pair of magnifying glass contraption on my head to be able to see the holes in the Aida cloth, lol. I would go crazy trying to work on such counted stitches. You are so courageous to even try. It looks good to me what you have done. Perhaps look closely at a sample that you own if that would help to see how it's done. Sorry for not being of any help.
    Hugs.

  14. Hi, Robyn, I would find stitching over one on 40 ct absolutely impossible. I can't see 40 either, although I once did Freelove Hazard on 40 over 2, but that was quite a few years ago. My favorite count is 32, and doing a half cross over one isn't too hard on 32. Maybe start the sampler over on 32.
