My hook in hand...

I've been warming my hooking chair once again. I found a few minutes yesterday...and it was wonderful!

I do want to share a great find. Some of you most likely are already aware...but here goes. My Ott light bit the dust a few weeks ago. The thingie you use to attach it to a table crumbled. So, I went to Joann's with the intention of buying a new one. I looked and looked and was not impressed...especially with the prices for the floor models...even with a coupon. I had decided I wanted a light I could move easily...one that stands alone...a floor model. Was not too impressed with any of the lights they had in stock.

Came home and did a little looking on the computer. Did you know they carry Ott lights at Lowe's??? I didn't...and I spend my Saturdays there on a regular basis!

I am loving my new light!!! 24 watts...lightweight...and it's black! Ready? Forty nine dollars! $49.00.

It is strictly utilitarian...no bells and whistles. You have to plug it in to turn it on. The base is weighted, but it has a moveable head. It is so nice and light! The same Ott light for a much better price.

I like the fact that it is black...it blends into my room much better. And, the head stays put wherever you need the light. I was always adjusting my old light because the head was so heavy. Anyway, I am pleased and so is my purse!

**********************************

I know many of you have made "resolutions" for the new year. One I have made is to read more. I use to be an avid reader...always had a book in my hand. I am going to get back to it this year. Turn off the computer...the t.v. and read.

First book this year...and it's wonderful! It's a movie now, but I always try to read the book before seeing the movie. This book has a good deal of history in it which is an added plus. It will make your heart ache for the American chestnut tree. So much more great info than I had expected.

Another book that has been made into a movie is, In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick.

I have not seen the movie yet, but the book is one of my all time favorites. It is a true story, and is the tale that inspired Moby Dick. It is such a gripping read. Mr. MW and I have given copies of this book to so many of our friends because it is such a good one...at least we think so.

Maggie Bonanomi's "Thistle Down Moon"...revisited

So...more hooking, more reading...oh, and more vegetables...welcome 2016!

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  2. I have not read a walk in the woods but I have been hiking in the Smokies for over 30 years so I have seen the stumps of the great chestnuts. Also the cabins that are still standing that the logs were cut from chestnut.

  3. Good lighting is such a nice gift to give yourself at the beginning of the new year. It's a nice looking light too and only $49.00 and the timing was just right. It's amazing what information we can find on the computer if we do our research.

    I'm glad your hooking again.
I haven't made any new year's resolutions but I make list of goals I want to accomplish. My list keep growing with long term, short term and in between term goals. I like to scratch then off the lists as I reach the goals.

    Good luck with your goals.
    Hugs,
    JB

  4. I just reserved A Walk in the Woods at my library...I'm next in line. I also read my library reviews of In the Heart of the Sea and they were overwhelmingly positive, so I'll go this afternoon to pick it up to tide me over before A Walk in the Woods is available. Can't thank you enough for your recommendations...been wanting to see A Walk in the Woods for a while now and I see where it's available now on dvd.

Happy Hooking from Diane in North Carolina

  5. I'm happy to hear you have hook in hand! Great deal on the light. I could not hook without my Ott.
When I retire I plan to read, read, read. I just don't have the time now and if I pick up a book and like it, I won't put it down. Not a good thing when the alarm goes off at 5:30am and I am not a morning person.
    Hugs :)

  8. Am so glad to know the hook is warming in your hands and cannot wait to see your bounty. I have two OTT floor lights which I've had for years and two portable ones so think I'm good for now. But next time at Lowes I WILL check out the OTT.

  9. I have read 'A Walk In The Woods', but not 'In The Heart Of The Sea'. I appreciate a good read in the evening. Thank you for the tip.
I love my floor ott lamp. Amazing what good lighting can do for stitching ! Maybe Lowes might also have a table model. I need one to travel with. I must say I love your black lamp. At finally, someone else who walks around Lowes !!

  10. Thanks for the reviews. I haven't read in a long while and just don't know what to get! This helps. I have one of the old heavy based Dazor circline magnifier floor lamps that can also be clamped to a table. Never use it. Will check into your suggestion.

  11. I purchased myfloor Ott light last year at Joanns. It was $50 because they were moving locations, so I got a good deal on it. Cannot wait to see the progress on your rug. No resolutions for me...so I can say I did not break it. LOL Janice

  13. Thanks for sharing that Lowe's has Ott lights. They make SUCH a big difference in visibility - especially if you work at night! I'm an avid reader - totalled up my list from last year and found a total of 54 books read - wow! Good luck with your reading....

  14. It's so good to see that you are hooking again! Hooray for finding a good Ott light too! Thanks for the book recommendations. I saw the trailer for the one about the whale ship Essex. I want to read the book. I read Moby Dick ages ago.

  16. Glad you found the light you wanted. I haven't read any books for quite some time, it's hard to find a really good book, but when you do it is so enjoyable.

  17. I read Bill Bryson years ago and I laughed so hard a couple of times I hurt myself.
I hope they did a nice job of the movie. Your hooking chair is wonderful. I hope to get back to mine. I need an ott light as well. I thought they were more expensive.
I wish you a great new year.

  18. I seem to have misplaced my hook again... I literally had not hooked for over a year or more during the chaos called "remodel," but did spend a day a few months ago trying to match up my wool piles with the 3 projects I had going when chaos hit. Then, I actually sat down a few nights and hooked a bit...Well, then Christmas hit, and I haven't pulled nary a worm.... And books...ahh...books.... I, too, need to get back to reading...but I think I may need some "professional counseling" first... I have a bit of an addictive personality when it comes to reading. When I read, I READ...non-stop... And that's precisely why I stopped... I was getting nothing else accomplished and staying up way too late (even for a night owl like me). If I could learn some moderation, I would so enjoy it again... But that "In the Heart of the Sea" is truly tempting me.... Will have to hunt down a copy. Thanks for the recommendation. Hope your weekend is off to a great start.... Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

  23. Just reading your blog after not visiting for a while and was surprised to find someone reading two books that were on my list. I have not read them yet but A Walk in the Woods made me think of an Audible book that I listened to that was also about the Appalachian Mountains. Bear in the Back Seat. Wonderful stories and although not really about the mountains but rather bears it was still very enjoyable. I too bought an OTT floor light and was able to get it for 75% off due to a misprint but I have not been happy with it. It is top heavy and when adjusted it will move and the magnifier if you use it and need to move it will cause the lamp to topple over. I will certainly look for this light at Lowe's! Thank you for a great post!
