George and Martha's Place...and a few favorite things

Hello, friends. Still struggling with camera and loading pics. Did get a card reader but it's a bit more complicated to work with so I've avoided it. Also having trouble getting into PicMonkey... It's all fun and games till you mess with a senior citizen's tech knowledge...or lack there of!

Today I'm posting about a trip to Washington, D.C. we took a few years ago. We're headed back there soon. One of our favorites sites...Mount Vernon...is on our to do list. If you have never been, put it on your bucket list...and yes, it's open, it runs purely on donations.

The above pic shows Annie beginning to melt down. It was toward the end of the day and she was spent. Since Annie had her hamstring injury, and we purchased her "buggy", she has enjoyed our trips more and gotten much more out of them. It was a struggle for all of us before she had her wheels. I'm hoping she will enjoy our upcoming visit to D.C. more than the last.

George and Martha welcoming us to their home.

The beginning of the day and Annie has already had it with all the walking. But, walk she did...all over the estate.

We will be there again during early spring.

The grounds are wonderful.

The new museum is the absolute best! So many of the artifacts now at Mt. Vernon I remember seeing as a child at the Smithsonian. Glad they have come home.

Springtime in Virginia.

She will enjoy it so much more with her wheels.

I can't wait!

********************************

Christmas came and went and I never got any pics posted. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Ours was quiet and cozy.

We visited one of our favorite hotels and admired their huge gingerbread house.

Annie and mom had tea in the lobby while listening to a wonderful pianist play Christmas carols.

We said goodbye to our Bar family and headed home to welcome Christmas.

Our Agnes was softly lit by the candlelight from our "Thomas Jefferson Lamps" a special edition from Waterford from years ago. She's never looked more radiant. Candlelight is always flattering to mature ladies.

We went small with the tree because mom is getting old and tired.

We decorated with favorite things. Our "Martha Washington Bowl", again the American 1776 Collection from Waterford, was filled with holly. The white slipcovers stayed on and not one single Christmas box was brought down from the attic this year. Did I mention mom is getting...well, you know.

Annie added some familiar faces to keep her company.

And of course, a few more of our favorite things.

We welcomed a few new friends. It was a wonderful Christmas...Annie said so..."The best Christmas ever"!

Hope 2019 finds you all well, healthy and happy!

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  1. It's so nice seeing a post from you. I understand the problem with the ever changing technology and I can't keep up with it either like our kids. My daughter has an app that let her see who is at her door even when she is a world away. It's just amazing.

It looks like you had a very nice Christmas by the looks on Annie's face. She love her soft cuddly friends. Christmas was very low key this year too and I debated wether I would put up the tree but I forced myself to put it up. Without the little ones around, it seems like the magic is gone. We went to my daughter for Christmas dinner. So much easier for me. Your little tree is making a statement, non the less. Putting things away took me three days. It's hard when we start to feel old.

Every time I see an owl decoration, I think of Annie's Christmas tree and it makes me smile.
Enjoy your trip to see Martha and George.
    Hugs, Julia

    1. Hi, Julie...Yes, those wheels have kept us moving these last years on all our trips. Annie is now able to fully enjoy the wonderful sites. It also keeps her from touching everything, sitting on the floor and, especially, picking up germs. We wore our first buggy out and have quite a few miles on the new one already. Yes, Mount Vernon is a must see...put it on your list!
      Take care,
      Robyn xox

  3. Good to hear from you, Julia. I always put up Annie's owl tree...and my Santa feather tree. Glad you had an easy Christmas, too. My husband is always telling me to do less and I'm finally ready to take him up on it.
    Take care,
    Robyn

  5. So happy to see a post from you! We loved Mount Vernon as well, but it was so hot and humid when we were there that we didn't see the entire estate. I'm hoping for a return trip in better weather :)
So glad that you had a happy holiday! It can still be great without all the trappings - I am feeling the same way :)
    Blessings, Patti

    1. I've been there when it was hot and horrible. Spring and fall are the best times and not as full of tourists. Thanks for coming by and happy 2019!

  6. Looks like a wonderful place to visit, which I have not. No idea it was that large!

Not one box from the attic? A goal for all of us to embrace! Your holiday decorating is still wonderful. Glad you all had a very nice Christmas.

  7. I love American History. Sounds like George and Martha greeted you with open arms. Wished I lived closer...West coast is a bit too far to VA, even for driving and hubs will not fly. Your home is always exquisitely decorated, 2018 Christmas was no exception. You can tell Annie had a very Happy Christmas ... She has a contagious smile.
Say Hi to Annie for Sandy and me...
    Peace for 2019,

    1. Thanks, Barbara...I'm with "hubs", I don't fly anymore either. Last time I said 42 Acts of Contrition as the plane took a nose dive from 30 to 10 thousand feet in seconds! I never liked it! Today, with computers, we can go anywhere! Hope you had a great Christmas and I'll bet Sandy had lots of fun. Thanks for stopping by and your kind comments.

  8. By the look on Annie's face I'd say it was the best Christmas ever.
So happy the wheels make her happy and ease your stress.
Mt. Vernon looks like a wonderful place to visit. I've been to Monticello, but not Mt. Vernon.
Wonderful pic of you, Annie and Mr. MW!
    Hugs to all 😊

    1. Monticello is on our to do list. Since I was born, literally, down the street from Mt. Vernon, I never tire of going there. Annie's buggy makes life much easier for all of us. Thanks for the lovely words.

  13. Hello My Dear Little Mugwump.... I do hope you remember me...I’m the Robin with the “i”??? ;-). Happy 2019...and belated Christmas wishes. Your Christmas touches...like all your touches always are...were exquisite. Simple really is better. The Spirit never did find me this Christmas-tide, and although I put up 95% of my decorations, it bought little joy...and I said that I will not do it again. And the “putting away” gets more and more tedious over the years.... In fact., there are lonely Santas and naked trees still hanging out here. Mt. Vernon looks amazing....but huge. No wonder Annie was tired of walking...as would I be (well, especially after falling down the stairs, breaking my leg, tearing my ACL and my VMO lol...haven’t been the same since). I wish my husband appreciated history a bit more than he does... I can think of a million and 1 places I would love to go. Hope all has been well with you... Smiles & Hugs (for Annie too!) ~ Robin

  14. Hello, Miss Robin...So happy to hear from you, but sorry to hear about your fall...ouch! I liked not getting all the "stuff" out this Christmas...more time to do fun things. (I didn't get the boxes down for Halloween either) Slowing down here and having to make adjustments. Mt. Vernon is large, but doable in one day. We are all history lovers at our house so it makes for a fun day when we can see it up close.
Take care of yourself, my feathered friend and let us hear from you more often.

  15. Hello Robin, So nice to read your Christmas post. Must have been the year, I did not decorate much either. In fact I downsized my Christmas goodies. It is a job putting it all up and taking it down! Ugh!!! Hope you have a happy and healthy New Year, Pat

  16. This was a beautiful post, Robyn ! (Only getting to it now !)
Lovely tree, smaller doesn't make it less ;)
With snow on the horizon, I really liked seeing those daffodils !
A breath of fresh air !
I'm sure Annie is loving her new buggy ! I remember getting my E-bike (electric bike) all of a sudden, I could keep up with my radical bike riding family ! We can easily ride 20 plus miles, without any problems ! Makes everyone happy ;)

  17. So glad your Christmas and New Year were a blessing. I didn’t have the energy for Christmas decorations this year either. Mine was more mental than physical though. I had no idea Mt. Vernon ran on donations. It’s definitely in my bucket list—especially after this post. Judy
