...seeing spots

I'm seeing spots today...and painting them, too.

This is an old Pennsylvania German style of folk art painting. It might not appeal to everyone, but I really, really like it. It's so folky!

Although I have seen these spots on furniture, as well as walls, it was this book by Nancy Braithwaite that really pushed me to paint. This talented designer used spots on the walls of her Atlanta home.

Her spots are larger than mine as she was painting a wall, while I painted a smaller mantle. It was a fun did not take long...and the size and spacing is random. You really can't mess it up, so it was just plain fun.

Of course Mr. MW has yet to see it...and Annie started singing Cruella DeVille when she saw it. But me? I like it...but then, I adore polka dots!

Still have to figure out what to put in the interior space. It's very much a work in progress, but I thought I'd share as I go. Sometimes you just need to change things up!

Anyone else seeing spots today?

Enjoy the day,

  1. I love you're dots Can't wait to see what else you do and will be checking out the book The cover is so inspirational Thanks for sharing

  2. Looking forward to more. You always have such exquisite taste!
    Hugs :)

  3. I like it! But annie may be right.

  4. Fun! I think a painted board for each season would be nice inside. But I certainly don't have your flair so I'm anxious to see what you do.

  5. You are brave... What a fun project. I would print those spots on pillow too. Love it. I had to laugh at Annie's comment. She may have something there. Are you planning to get a Dalmatian? haha.

  6. Hmmm. may have to agree with Annie. Although I like polka dots, not sure I could be brave enough to do what you did. Janice

  7. I love it!! I do love polka dots.
I do like any kind of folk painting.
I think is so cute Annie started singing, so cute.

  8. Ha ha...Love that Annie girl!! I love the that I see them....but I don'tthink I could be that brave. But you have such exquisite taste I know I will be wishing once again that I were as creative as you are! Smiles & Hugs (and extra hugs for Sweet Annie!) - Robin

  9. Oh Robyn I think you are "spot on" with your wonderful polka dots on that mantle! Annie has a great sense of humor doesn't she! It will be interesting to see what you do with the inside. Bravo for taking a design chance and being so creative! LOve LOve It!!!

  10. It is lovely. I would forever think of 101 Dalmations after your sweet daughter's spot on song! It makes the sampler pop!

  11. From what I have seen, your preferences tend to be more traditional and classic. I do like it but not sure I could live with it. Love Annie's' rendition...perfect..and say Hi to Annie for us. Will be following you on this one.
Enjoy the day with much Peace,

    Folk Art Hugs, Barb

  13. I never would have thought of this as an old PA German style. What fun! Love that Annie started singing Cruella DeVille. lol! Makes sense! I think if I tried to paint the spots at random, they wouldn't look random..... Your mantel looks wonderful!

  14. Love it...I just punched up a spotted bunny from an old Fratur (not sure about the spelling) and working on a spotted horse!
