Evening

Last night I fired up all the candles in the living room. Sometimes I just like to sit with the candle glow washing over our little cottage. What's that old saying? "Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits."

These wing backs were given to us by my in laws about twenty five years ago. They are actually the very chairs my husband grew up with in his childhood home in Connecticut. They have been recovered a few times and my upholsterer always comments that they don't make furniture like this anymore...good and solid...the reason they are still around.

They have traveled hundreds of miles and offered a resting place to no less than four generations from both sides of our family.

Our sofa came to us by way of my upholsterer. A client of his was downsizing, so the 1940's sofa was recovered and joined the wing backs in our living room. It was recovered recently and my "new" upholsterer commented what a well made piece it was...all wood...wood that had been heated and curved the old way.

I like that my furniture has it's own story...that it was not discarded along the way. I like that I can sit on my well traveled chairs in the evening, and gaze out of my window at the homes of my wonderful neighbors. I like that when I sit in the candle glow and quiet, and the evening fades into the night, that I am grateful and content.

Do you have lots of fun planned for the 4th? Hope you all stay safe and makes lots of memories.

Mr. MW will be running in the Midnight Run tonight as he does every July 4th. At midnight, when the gun goes off, he'll be making his way down a candle lit course battling the skeeters and heat. Annie and I will be cool and bugless at home.

Enjoy the day,
Robyn

  2. Not only the light, but the love you have created in your home shines right through your photos. Thank you so much for sharing your happiness! As for the 4th...I've loaded up on Vegan cookbooks and will be grilling some kind of sausage on the grill. Todd, my son and I can see the fireworks from my yard. Harley ,the big sheep dog boy sits by the fence and watches quietly as long as you scratch his ears. I'll have the dutch door open for Hattie, the girl who is fearless but does not like booms in the night(that includes thunder) will be running in and out. Happy 4th.

  3. Candlelight is so calming, I love to do the same thing. Your home looks very cozy. Great pieces of furniture with stories to tell, so much better than anything you can buy new. Now a days they don't make anything like they used to. They use the cheapest materials they can get but yet they want to charge you an arm and a leg for it.

  4. Beautiful and what a wonderful night run. Wish we had one of those...I am "walking" our half marathon tomorrow morning...have to be at the course early and pick up a friend at 5 am. Ugh...BUT...should be a fun way to kick off the 4th..

  5. I usually get caught up on blogs in the still of each night. I often sit at my desk with only the "glow" of the computer screen as my light. When an image pops up that is taken using the warmth of candles in the room, it really transmits that ambiance over to the computer screen. That way when I visit my blog friends, I, too, can enjoy the candlelight! Thanks Robyn, for letting us all visit and enjoy the warmth of your candles and hospitality!

  7. Thanks for the tour of your beautiful living room. It is warm, serene and so inviting and the furniture is the bomb. The soft glow really adds ambiance.
Your taste is impeccable. You did such a professional job. It must be very satisfying to sit in there and look out the window.

Good for Mr. M. for being so energetic at midnight on the 4th.

    Happy 4th of July.
    Hugs,

  8. Hello Girls!

Robyn, I am a real fan of wing chairs too. I have the Mr. and Mrs. wing I grew up with, and remember sitting in as a girl, and then with my High School boyfriends, and now my husband! Your house is lovely and warm and I love your wall of books and old baskets.

  10. So Welcoming ... Like come and sit a spell. Love wing chiars. I have one that I purchased in a 2nd hand store many years ago. Love it as it is my favorite and I just keep getting it re-upholstered. Real candles burning do something magical for me ... so peaceful.
Have a Happy 4th with Peace and Blessing to All of America, Barb
